Third grade students at Crestview Elementary hosted a patriotic and powerful music program dedicated to Veterans on March 8 under the direction of Leslie Martin, music teacher at Crestview.
The event started with students escorting family members who are Veterans into the cafeteria while other students saluted the Veterans as they entered. The program consisted of several songs honoring Veterans and our country, as well as videos to show the impact of their service.
An emotional dedication was made by Crestview Principal, Stacy Davis, to all Veterans, specifically former Crestview principal Doug Smith whose family was in attendance.
“In life we all meet people,” said Davis. “They either become an acquaintance, a friend, a dear friend, and even some will be considered a part of our family. These individuals can also have a big impact on our beliefs. They help us all see that we have a cause greater than ourselves. This pushes us to do more than we ever thought was capable. Today we were honored to be surrounded by those that have done just this. They have responded to the call of duty doing more than what is required or expected. These Veterans expect nothing in return for their sacrifice and bravery. We thank them for their example they have set for us all. Today we also are taking the time to honor Doug Smith. He was an amazing leader in FISD. In 2003, when he was principal of Crestview Elementary, he was called for active duty as a U.S. Marine. The students cheered for Mr. Smith as he took up his sergeant stripes and left some parting words for his school. ‘I always tell them to be terrific,’ Smith said. ‘The strength of our country comes from our people.’ He encouraged us to expect nothing but the best and make each day count. Today we honor him and all the veterans before us. This is a good time to remember that our freedom isn’t guaranteed. It’s protected by the men and women in our Armed Services. To those who secure our way of life … thank you!”
The event was streamed live on the campus’s Facebook page for everyone near and far to enjoy. The program concluded by Veterans and their family members walking the halls of the school while students greeted them with a salute, hand shake and words of gratitude.
