In conjunction with the CTE courses at Frenship High School, Crestview students have been learning about occupations and what they might want to do when they grow up.

Crestview first grade teacher Saundra Wimberley said as an introduction to the FHS criminal justice classes, first graders were learning about the jobs of security and police officers.

“Frenship’s own officer James Baughcum visited each first grade class and talked with the students about his job, his background, how he was trained, why he enjoys his job, and some important facts,” Wimberley said. “He talked about being in the military and how they helped him train, as well as his time with some impressive police work positions.”

During his visit, Baughcum engaged students with facts about Frenship’s police dog, their police vehicles, some of the tools he uses, and even what to do when you hear a siren.

“Children were fascinated by his handcuffs and the design of his uniform and badge, but also asked about how good he was at reading and math,” Wimberley said. “The officer took it all in stride and answered every question with kindness and wisdom.”

Wimberley said the students discussed being respectful to police and others in the community, as well.

“After the visit, students recorded facts they’d learned, and designed their own police/security badges,” Wimberley said. “Having an expert from the community visit the students was very valuable to learning about a job, and Officer Baughcum was a welcome visitor!”
