Crestview Elementary Students Learn to Ride Bikes

Earlier this school year, Crestview Elementary received a donation of several bikes from Lubbock’s Family PowerSports, with the help of the organization All Kids Bike. The intention behind this donation was to teach the kindergarten students to ride a bike at school.

All Kids Bike is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to teach every child in America how to ride a bike in kindergarten physical education class. Family Power Sports was able to donate the fleet of strider bikes, helmets, and training and curriculum guides to Crestview for PE teacher Ben Wade to use with his students.

The students have been enjoying the bikes and spent the last two weeks in PE class riding them. In addition to bike riding lessons, Wade started introducing activities to the students that help them learn traffic signals and general road awareness.

Last week, the students worked on weaving between a series of cones. The week before, students worked on striding and then stopping at designated cones to check both ways for traffic to simulate real world situations. The control of the bike is improving for many of the students.  Some of the students are already showing the teachers that they are ready for the pedals to be placed on the bikes.

Frenship High School Woodshop decided to get in on the project. They designed and built a stands for the bikes.

The stands has been a wonderful addition to keep all of the bikes organized, and its great to see older students using their skills to help younger students. So far, the strider bikes have been an excellent learning tool for the kindergarten PE classes at Crestview, and it will be exciting to see how the students continue to learn with them.
