Crestview Elementary Students Learn About Fire Prevention Month

During the month of October first grade students at Crestview learn about fire safety. In class, teachers review the school procedures for evacuating the building with students and teach them about ‘stop, drop and role.’ They have discussions about fire hazard items students should avoid, such as stoves, matches, fire sticks/lighters, and candles.

Students' homework includes making a safety plan for exiting their homes, a plan to meet their family at a designated location and checking all smoke detectors.

Teachers also talked to students about prioritizing an escape during a fire and to yell for firefights if they get stuck and remembering not to hide during a fire.

To wrap up their fire safety curriculum, firefighters from station 18 visited first graders at Crestview. The firefighters from station 18, are the same one that would serve Crestview in case of an emergency.

Lieutenant Adam Moore showed students all the pieces of their gear and equipment and familiarized them with how they look when they’re entering a house to rescue someone. After the presentation, students were allowed to climb through the cab of the firetruck.

In addition to learning fire safety, students gained respect for the local firefighters, an understanding about their jobs and equipment, and an appreciation for the jobs they do for the community.

“Our local fire department is so kind when teaching our children about their jobs and fire safety,” said Saundra Wimberley, first grade teacher at Crestview. “They were not only professional, but great at communicating with our Tigers!”
