At Crestview Elementary, first graders learned about fire safety through classroom discussion and a special visit from Station 18 firefighters. In class they talked about safety at home, stop-drop-and-roll, checking smoke detectors, leaving matches and other hot items to the adults, and discussed their school fire drills.
The students used the motto, “be prepared – not scared” throughout the week including during the firefighters’ visit. The students had some homework with their families to make plans for getting safely out of their homes and where to meet outside.
The kind and capable Station 18 firefighters came to visit all 5 classes of first graders. They demonstrated how the gear, fire hydrants and hoses work. They let students climb through the cabin of the truck and talked to them about how to escape a fire. The firemen emphasized to never reenter a house to rescue a pet or favorite toy. The first graders had some interesting questions, and all were eagerly answered by the professionals.
“Crestview is blessed to have active community helpers who are willing to help educate our students,” said Saundra Wimberly, Crestview first grade teacher.
At Oak Ridge Elementary, kindergarten planned a trip to the Fire Station to help students understand the value of jobs & identify roles of a firefighter. The students learned how firefighters contribute to our community.
During the visit the students not only learned about fire safety, but also got to explore and use their speech skills by asking questions and by listening to firefighters. Students also had an opportunity to explore the fire truck, and visually see fire safety equipment a firefighter uses during an emergency.
Students learned how firefighters put out fires and rescue people or pets from fires. Students learned an important lesson to ‘stop, drop, & roll’ in case of an emergency and how to dial 911.
