Each year on the second Sunday in September thousands of people across the country celebrate grandparents for National Grandparents Day. The official proclamation of Grandparents Day states that the holiday is used “to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.”
Across Frenship, elementary schools invited grandparents to campus to celebrate with their students through various activities. At Legacy Elementary School, Principal Carol Kidd and Assistant Principal Stephanie Nations sought to find an activity that everyone could participate in no matter the age or grade.
Legacy decided to host a BINGO Day, where Pre-K, kindergarten, first, and second graders played bingo with their grandparents in the morning session, and third, fourth, and fifth graders joined in the afternoon. Between the two sessions, nearly 200 grandparents participated.
During the bingo event, Legacy student council officers served everyone in attendance with cookies and lemonade donated by United Supermarkets. Jersey Mike’s Subs, At’l Do Farms, and Raising Cane’s also contributed by providing prizes for the bingo winners.
Nations stated the excitement could be felt from the moment the grandparents stepped into the building. One grandparent made the day for the office staff by walking into the office and proudly announcing, “I’m here to play bingo with my precious granddaughter!!”
The excitement on the students’ faces as they walked into the cafeteria and saw their grandparents waiting for them was priceless. Smiles, laughter, and hugs filled the entire cafeteria throughout the whole event.
Legacy administration strives to keep the involvement of parents, families, and the community a top priority.
“We understand the importance and impact that keeping our families engaged has on the success of Legacy students,” said Nations. “Grandparents are a key component of the school community and deserve to be honored. Our goal is to extend our family connections beyond the students’ parents to deepen and strengthen our relationships with every family at Legacy.”
Across the district at Crestview Elementary, grandparents joined their 1st-grade students for Grandparent Teas. Students and their grandparents sang, danced, played games, and enjoyed a few treats together. This has been a tradition at Crestview for over 20 years. The grandparents smile from ear to ear throughout the teas, and the students adore having their grandparents there.
They also enjoyed some fill-in grandparents such as aunts, neighbors, and the retired PE coach from Crestview and her husband affectionally known as Mrs. Coach Coner and Mr. Coach Conder. First graders were honored to host all these fine “older” folks in their lives.
In preparation for the Grandparent Teas, Saundra Wimberley, a first-grade teacher at Crestview, has her students complete a fun assignment titled "When I am a grandma/grandpa, I will..." where they finish the sentence. The answers are always interesting. Check out some of their responses below.
