This week, Crestview Elementary’s first graders visited their neighbors at Peoples Bank for an up-close look at all things money. The students recently finished studying coins and are now in the middle of math and social studies lessons about financial literacy, including spending, saving, and earning money.
This trip to the bank stirred excitement in the students, as many have never been inside a bank. They were eager to tour the building and meet the bank professionals. Peoples Bank staff, including Chelsea Salazar, a Frenship ISD Board of Trustees Member, led them through the bank, showing them coin and bill counting machines, and introducing them to tellers.
The students had the opportunity to sit inside the safe deposit box vault and discuss what items they would keep safe. From precious jewels to favorite toys, the students shared a variety of ideas for what could be stored in the boxes. The bank staff also encouraged the students to consider starting a savings account soon.
Additionally, the staff taught the students how to spot counterfeit bills and explained the proper way to handle spare coins. They also advised those interested in becoming bankers to focus on developing their math and computer skills.
The Crestview first-grade teachers are grateful to the bank staff for providing an engaging and educational experience for the students. With a firsthand look at how a bank operates, the students may now be thinking about their future careers in banking. A special thanks to the staff at Peoples Bank for making this valuable learning opportunity possible and for their generosity in sharing their time and expertise with the students.
